Best Small Planers for Tiny Spaces on a Budget

I'm living in a one-bedroom apartment and have a small patio to work on. I'm looking for a compact planer that's suitable for my space and budget, which is around $150 to $200. I've considered hand planers, but I'm worried about the learning curve and setup. Any suggestions?

If you go the hand plane route, look for ones that are beginner-friendly, like a jack plane or a smoothing plane. They'll give you a nice finish without too much setup. Plus, they’re great for small projects on your patio! You can often find good options at local shops or online.

If you're on a tight budget, I suggest keeping an eye out for a used lunchbox-style planer. But honestly, with under $200, you might find that most electric thickness planers aren't worth the hassle. I'd recommend skipping handheld electric planers altogether. Instead, consider getting a few hand planes. They’re quieter, easier to clean up after, and they won't take up much space—your neighbors will thank you!
