Hey everyone! I'm planning to clear a part of my yard to start a garden this weekend, but I've hit a snag—my soil is almost all sand. Should I just dig it out and replace it with topsoil, or can I simply add some manure and maybe some fish or seaweed liquid to improve it? I'm trying to keep costs down but I'm also realistic about the need for quality soil.

Definitely avoid adding raw manure unless it’s been properly composted, especially if it's horse manure. I personally got a bulk load of garden soil from a nearby supplier and it turned out to be cheaper and a lot easier than dealing with bags. Plus, you know exactly what you're getting!
You might want to mix in some peat moss or coconut coir along with compost and manure. Those additions help with both aeration and humus, which is crucial for good soil. If you want to skip the hassle, you could also consider buying bagged garden soil; just make sure it has the right additives by checking the label. And remember, in the fall, putting leaves on your garden bed can help enrich the soil for next year!
Manure can be a budget-friendly option since it's readily available. Just make sure it’s been composted to avoid issues. It’s great for improving soil quality without breaking the bank!
