Best Soil for Grading Around My House to Prevent Flooding?

Asked By SunnyDayz82 On

Last year, my basement flooded due to excessive rain, and now I'm planning to add some soil around my house to help divert water away. Can anyone recommend what type of soil I should use for this project? I live in Montreal, Canada, so local advice would be especially helpful!

I wouldn't worry too much about overcomplicating it. Just go for topsoil, maybe mixed with some sand. If you’re unsure, a local landscaper can definitely steer you in the right direction. I live in Montreal too, and when I redid my grading last year, I topped it off with grass seed or sod to prevent the new soil from washing away.
