Best Squash and Cucumber Varieties for Pest Resistance?

Asked By GreenThumb07 On

I'm looking for recommendations on squash and cucumber varieties that are known to be more resistant to pests. Every year, I struggle with squash bugs, cucumber beetles, and this season I've also dealt with vine borers. It's really disheartening! I've planted several types in hopes of having some sacrificial plants, but the pests seem to love them all. Any tried-and-true advice would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!!!

I've had good luck with Zephyr squash; it's not only adorable with its yellow and light green colors, but it also tends to resist pests better. The ribbed Italian squashes are great too because they can root along the stems! And don't overlook Zucchino Rampicante; it's a delicious climber that's a bit of a space hog but worth it!

This year, I've had an incredible experience with tromboncino and Korean aehobak. They’ve been super productive and tough against vine borers, even bouncing back from some major damage! Just one of my plants produced over 25 squash, and I've been pulling them like crazy!

I'm not sure about specific species, but generally, healthier plants fend off pests better. Make sure to give your plants enough space to grow; it really helps with airflow and access to nutrients. I’ve also heard about using trap crops like Blue Hubbard squash, which can lure pests away from your main garden!

I ran into vine borers this year too! They targeted my hubbard squash, which I planted as a trap crop to begin with. But my honey nut squash and sweet pie pumpkins have held up well, despite the squash bugs and cucumber beetles causing some trouble. Next year, I'm only planting moschata varieties, as they're said to be resistant to vine borers.

While I can't recommend specific resistant varieties, consider attracting wasps to your garden. I have a hive nearby, and they keep the pests like leaf miners in check on my squash and cucumber plants. It’s a natural pest control without much effort!
