Best Stud Finders for Hanging a TV in an Older Home

I just moved into a home from the 1940s and I'm trying to hang a TV on the wall. I have a Bosch GMS120 stud finder that has worked well for me, but it's given me two false positives for studs here. When I drilled, there were no studs, only insulation came out. Does anyone have recommendations for a good stud finder that can handle deep scans on older walls?

Sounds like your Bosch might not be up to the challenge of plaster walls! I’d recommend the Zircon HD800; it’s specifically designed for older plaster and has great reviews. It could make a big difference for you!

You might want to check out the Franklin ProSensor 710+ for something a bit more high-end. If you're looking for something more budget-friendly, the Zircon edge-finding model is good too. Both have solid performance!

Another tip is to use your electrical outlets as a guide for finding studs. Typically, outlets are on the sides of studs, so you can knock on the wall and see which side sounds more hollow. Just a thought, it might help you out!

Have you tried using a magnet? It can help you locate where the nails are in the wall, which is where the studs are attached to the drywall. It’s a simple and effective method!
