Hey everyone! I'm planning to install LVP (Luxury Vinyl Plank) flooring in my home, which includes the kitchen, two bathrooms, and a laundry room still covered in vinyl sheet flooring, while the rest of the house has carpet. I'm planning to rip out the carpet and padding, but I'm a bit stuck on how to level the floors because the carpeted areas are about 1/2 inch lower than the others. Currently, there's particle board under the vinyl areas. Should I put in the more affordable particle board in the carpeted areas or go for a 1/2 inch sheet of plywood instead? I'd prefer not to mess with the existing particle board where it is since that would mean dealing with plumbing around the toilets and kitchen cabinets. The cost difference is around $20 per sheet, totaling about $1,000 for my 1600 sq ft house. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

I’ll second that, go with plywood instead of particle board. Also, removing the existing particle board might not be as hard as you think. Definitely check if it’s glued down or not first. If you find it’s not, a toe-kick saw paired with an oscillating tool will help you around the cabinets. And as for those toilets, since you’re replacing the flooring, you’ll want to take them out anyway to do a proper job. It's super easy!
Sounds like a fun project! I’d advise against adding more particle board where the carpet is. It's not great with moisture and can get warped if any water gets under your LVP. Plywood is definitely more durable and stable, which could be a better long-term solution, plus it makes for a more even surface. Sure, the up-front cost is higher, but it's usually worth it in the end.

I was worried about the toilet flange being flush with the particle board, and if I take it out, I’d have to lower it to fit the wax ring right. But I think I’ll just go with the plywood option. It might help with any squeaks too if I glue and screw it down. Thanks for your help! Cheers!
