Hey everyone! I'm new to growing pole beans. I usually go for bush beans since I do container gardening. I'm curious about which pole beans you all think taste the best. I'm looking for a classic green bean variety that produces well, especially since I'm limited on space. Also, I'm located in Southern California—does that influence your recommendations? You can definitely plant pole beans close together without worrying about thinning them out—these plants love being cozy! If you're after great flavor, I'd recommend trying the heirloom Kentucky Wonder; it's super tasty. For higher yields, some of the newer hybrid varieties might give you better production overall.
Romano types are fantastic if you want a lot of beans with great flavor. They’re perfect for cooking and pickling, plus they tend to produce well. I've also had success with the Trionfo Violetto—it's a purple snap bean that's really easy to pick and does well in the heat. Rattlesnake beans are great too but are a bit less tasty. Keep in mind, your local climate can make a big difference, especially with heat, so be sure to consider that when choosing your varieties!
