I'm looking for advice on how to improve my kitchen floor until I can do a full renovation in about 3-5 years. Currently, my prefinished hardwood floors are in pretty bad shape—lots of peeling and uneven wear. I'm considering two options: 1) peel-and-stick tiles or 2) sanding and painting the floors. I want something that will last for up to five years with minimal touch-ups. I'm okay with a bit of wear on the paint but definitely want to avoid tiles popping up, especially since I have kids and dogs. Also, there's a step down to the eating nook that I plan to include in whatever project I choose. Just to clarify, I'm not looking for anything wood or wood-look since I have beautiful heart of pine throughout the rest of my home and don't want to try matching it.

Given your situation with kids and pets, I would recommend painting and then using a durable vinyl mat on top. I've done something similar and it works really well. If you really want something more permanent, maybe consider sheet vinyl or linoleum—it lasts a long time and is super durable. Just make sure to get a style that you like since it'll be there for a few years!
If you’re open to it, I’d suggest throwing down some budget-friendly plank flooring right on top of your existing floor. It's easy to install and should hold up for about five years with regular use. I've scored some good thin options for under $1 per square foot on clearance! Just be ready for a little mix of textures next to your real wood.
I just really dislike how fake wood looks next to actual wood; it feels off!
You might want to consider a vinyl floor mat too, especially if you're dealing with broken tiles down below. Super easy to lay down and can really change the look of your kitchen without a fuss. Plus, it handles the wear and tear from kids and pets pretty well!
How do you think it would hold up with the step down? Would it make it uneven?

What about the look, though? I mean, wouldn't you notice seams if the kitchen is small?
