Best Thorny Bushes to Keep Neighbors at Bay?

Asked By SunnyDaze82 On

I'm putting up a property line fence to keep my rather troublesome elderly neighbor from wandering onto my land. However, I'm constrained by local regulations that prevent me from adding a fence in the front yard. Instead, I'm thinking about planting some strong hedges just inside the property line. I'm looking for your favorite bushes that can send a clear message: "Stay out!" I'm in Zone 6B and prefer evergreens that are also friendly to pollinators and possibly flowering.

If you're looking for something with a serious 'stay away' factor, try barberry or pyracantha. They both have intense thorns and can create a robust hedge. Just be cautious with the maintenance since they can get out of hand if left unchecked!

Barberries are tough! Even if they're a bit messy, they definitely deliver on the thorny factor!

Holly bushes are a great option! They grow dense, can be shaped to your liking, and their sharp leaves are no joke! Plus, they'll provide berries for the birds in winter too.

Holly is an excellent choice! It's pretty and serves as a solid deterrent. Just a tip: if you’re planning to walk barefoot, watch out for those dry leaves!

You might want to consider blackberries or raspberries! They're thorny, fast to grow, and, on top of that, provide delicious fruit. Just keep them contained; otherwise, they'll spread like crazy!

Just make sure you choose a native variety, and definitely set up some barriers, or you’ll be dealing with runners invading both your and your neighbor's yard!
