I'm in the process of building a sled and need to cut a channel with a router on my workbench top. However, my workbench corners aren't square and the edges are a bit uneven. If I use the corners as a reference, my channel might end up angled instead of straight. What's the best method I can use to draw a perfectly straight and square line on my bench for the sled rails without relying on the corners? Should I go for a diagonal check, use a long straight edge, or maybe create a template first? Any suggestions would be appreciated!

I’ve got a long clamping guide that works wonders! If you have one, clamp it down and run your router base against it to ensure your channel is nice and straight. It's better than just a straight edge because it gives you a solid surface to work with.
Definitely go for a straight edge! I have a 72" straightedge and a couple of clamping guides that really help. Just make sure if you’re using the clamping guide, you secure it well so it doesn’t move while you’re cutting.
You can easily draw a straight line by clamping a straight edge to your bench. It doesn't really matter if your corners are uneven; just use whatever straight material you have, like a board, and it'll guide your router perfectly. Super simple and effective!
