Hey everyone! I'm about to move into a new place and I'm eager to tackle some DIY projects, especially installing recessed lighting in a few rooms. I'm wondering what the best way to learn how to do this properly is. Do you have any recommendations for resources or step-by-step guides? Also, I have access to the attic, which might help!

I don't have a specific guide, but using a plumb laser and a rotozip can simplify the installation! Typically, you'll want to lay out the fixtures on the floor first and then mark the ceiling with the laser. Since you'll be working from the attic, it's actually easier to see the joists and avoid hitting them while cutting. Just ensure you measure accurately!
YouTube is your best friend for DIY projects like this! You can find tons of videos on installing recessed lighting. Also, check out library books if you can. Don't forget to look up the electrical codes in your area, as these can vary.
I just saw some pancake recessed lighting at Lowes, and they look super thin and easy to install! I use these canless puck lights all over my place. They do a great job without the harsh glare of traditional flush mounts. If you want a softer light, those deep baffle puck lights are awesome - I’ve used Torchstar brand and love them!
Installing recessed lighting comes down to a lot of electrical work, and you want to be safe. Make sure you're comfortable with the tools and consider if it's too risky as a DIY project. Everyone starts somewhere, but check your local codes and decide if it's something you really want to take on yourself.
