Best Tips for Painting Basement Stairs

Hey everyone! We just closed on our new house and I'm super excited to tackle some renovations. I have these basement stairs that I want to paint to give them a fun look, but I'm a bit unsure about the best technique. Should I paint from the top down and then be stuck in the basement waiting for the paint to dry? Or would it be better to go from the bottom up, even though that seems a bit complicated? Any tips or advice would be greatly appreciated! Thanks a ton!

Definitely use porch or floor paint for these stairs. They're made to handle a lot of weight—about 300 pounds! Regular wall paint won’t cut it for foot traffic.

Thank you! Do you think it would be okay to use wall or acrylic paint on the risers and then seal it? And for the step parts, just stick with the porch or floor paint?

I recommend going from the bottom up. Use enamel gloss and mix in some silica or beach sand into the paint for the treads. It’ll help with grip!

I would've never thought of that, thank you!!

A trick I used was to paint every other step starting from the top. That way, I could still get out of the basement using the unpainted steps! The next day, I went back to paint the others.

Thaaank you! I’ve been worried that starting from the bottom up would leave me stuck upside down in the middle 😂
