One technique I've found helpful is using a hand plane while moving the small part instead of the plane. It really helps maintain control, just make sure to wear gloves to avoid any accidents. It’s especially useful for box making! I've also found a shooting board to be a game changer for material removal that regular planing can't handle, especially for grooving or reducing dimensions without wasting material.
