I'm starting a garden in north Texas and I'm dealing with really tough clay and rocky soil. I've been trying to dig out a new bed, but my shovel just won't break through the grass no matter how hard I try. The only tool that's worked for me so far is a small hand trowel, but that's going to take ages! I'm looking for some efficient, preferably cheap tools to help me get the job done. I'm also open to any gardening tips you might have since I'm a newbie to this whole gardening thing!

Have you thought about using a mattock? It's a great tool for breaking up tough soil, especially in clay. Also, make sure your shovel is sharp; you'd be surprised how much difference that can make! And don't forget to water the soil if it's dry—it can turn rock hard and that makes digging super difficult.
If you're struggling with the clay, I’d suggest renting a tiller. It might feel like a bit overkill, but it really does break up the hard ground quickly and will set you up for a good gardening season. You can always add organic materials later to keep that soil healthy.
I think using a tiller sounds smart! You're right about soil health; starting out right will save you a lot of effort later.
I’ve been there! Instead of hacking away for hours, try the no-dig method with layers of cardboard and compost. It’s a game-changer, and way less back-breaking work. You can even soak the ground overnight to help soften it before getting started. Also, try to get a few friends over to help; it makes the labor much more manageable!
For a quick fix, soak the area really well, cover it with cardboard, soak again, and then get your friends to help dig! Just a bit of teamwork can make all the difference.
Totally agree! Soaking the ground can really help loosen things up before you dig.
