Best Tools for Sanding a Lot of Fence Boards?

I'm looking for some recommendations on how to sand around 200 cedar fence boards more efficiently. I call it getting the fur off, which helps with consistent staining and improves the overall look. The last time I tackled this, my hands were worn out from using one hand to hold the sander and the other to position each board. Considering my age, I'm wondering if there's a gentler method to get this done without exhausting myself.

A planer could work too! It makes the process a lot faster if that’s an option for you.

Have you thought about renting a drum sander? They’re perfect for jobs like these and can save you a ton of time and effort. Just check out some options at your local rental place!

If the boards aren’t attached yet, a drum sander is definitely the way to go, but keep in mind they can be pricey. Alternatively, a belt sander is quicker and might be easier to handle. You could also make an edge clamp to secure the boards while you sand—gives you both hands free!

Good point! I hadn't thought about clamping them down. Thanks!

I recently tackled the same job with a drum sander for 65 boards and it worked like a charm! Just make sure you're not spending a small fortune on a tool you'll use infrequently.

That sounds great! I'm all for anything that makes it easier.
