Best Top Coat for Protecting Painted Wood Outdoors?

Asked By SunnyDaze42 On

Hey there! I'm currently working on a project using white pine with a painted design, and I'm looking for advice on the best top coat to protect the paint from outdoor elements since I'll be hanging it outside. I have some oil-based polyurethane on hand, but I've come across mixed opinions on whether that's the right choice. Any recommendations on a good finish that will keep my paint safe? Thanks a ton for your help!

First off, what type of paint did you use for that design? It sounds like a fun project! If you're using acrylic paint, it's important to choose a compatible finish. I suggest going for a spar urethane, like Helmsman. It’s a solid choice for outdoor use, as it can withstand the elements better.

Just a heads-up, no outdoor finish lasts forever, so be prepared to recoat down the line. To prolong the life of your finish, make sure to hang it where it won't get too much rain or direct sunlight. If you go with that spar urethane, be sure to test it first with your paint to ensure it sticks well and doesn’t mess with your design.
