Best Types of Wood for Building a Bunk Bed?

Asked By CraftyBuilder99 On

I'm planning to build a bunk bed using hand tools and I'm looking for recommendations on what types of wood would be best for the project. Any suggestions on the types of wood to use and where I can find them would be super helpful!

If you're aiming for something really durable, go for hardwoods like white oak. It's strong, has a straight grain, and looks great. For something more practical and easier on the wallet, spruce, pine, or fir will do the job, especially if you overbuild the structure. You can find some nice plans on Ana-White.com that might be helpful, and they often use pocket-hole screws to make assembly easier!

Thanks for the tips! I’ll check out Ana-White for some plans.

Just be cautious with the weight limit if you go softwood!

If you're going for a budget-friendly option, construction wood like 2x4s is a solid choice. Pine and other softwoods work too, but keep in mind they can get dinged up pretty easily. If you want something a bit nicer, poplar is a good step up, especially if you plan to paint it. For durability and looks, oak or maple are great options!

Yeah, I agree! Oak has that nice grain and is super strong.

Maple is beautiful too, but definitely pricier. Depends on your budget!
