Hey everyone, I've got a 115W solar panel and I'm trying to figure out how to connect it to a small portable power station for some hands-on experimentation. I need to run about 10 meters of cable through a window, and I'm weighing a couple of options: 1) using an extension cable from the panel, then a flat cable through the window with a final XT60 connection indoors, or 2) just a longer XT60 extension starting outside the window. The second option would keep things simpler indoors since there's no connection inside, making it easier to keep the window slightly open.
I know it's important to keep connectors the same, and I'm considering buying an extension without connectors to crimp my own. Is it common practice to cut off connectors from flat cables and use them for XT60 connections? Also, should I be concerned about having connectors inside my house? I've heard mixed things, but there are flat cables available, so it seems like it might be okay. Any thoughts or insights would be greatly appreciated!

You should totally calculate the voltage drop over that 10m distance. There’s a great tool online that can help you with that! Just plug in the specs from your panel and see what you come up with. Remember, those 115W panels only crank out peak wattage under ideal conditions, so the drop can affect performance.
For your window situation, try using a pool noodle! Cut a hole in one and run your cable through it, then close the window on top. It’s an easy fix and keeps everything sealed. Make sure to convert the end of your cable to XT60 if needed. Experimenting is key, so good luck with it!
Honestly, for a 115W panel, you're not in much danger. You're likely only pulling about 5A, which isn't enough to create any fire hazards. Electrical concerns really ramp up the higher you go in power and voltage, especially when you start talking about larger solar setups. So for your small system, it's pretty safe!
Good to know. Thanks!

Thanks! I'm okay with the voltage drop calculations. My main concern is if the connectors are safe indoors since I've heard mixed opinions about that.
