Best Way to Dig a 10ft Perc Test Hole in Rocky Soil?

I need to dig a 10-foot perc test hole for a septic system in some dry, rocky soil. What are your thoughts on the best tools for the job? Are there any handheld augers that can handle that depth, or am I better off just renting an excavator? I'd appreciate any straight answers—thanks!

Just a heads-up: if you're not familiar with the soil types, that 10ft hole needs to be large enough for the engineer to assess different layers. I had a professional do my perc holes after struggling at first, and it paid off. They knew exactly how to locate where it would actually perc.

If you're dealing with volcanic rock that’s about 1 to 5 inches in diameter, you'll definitely want to rent a mini excavator. It makes the job way easier, especially since digging that deep with rocks will be a hassle. You're right on track considering that option!

You're probably not going to find a handheld auger that can dig that deep, especially in rocky soil. It's best to check with local hardware stores, but honestly, calling a contractor might be your best bet. They usually have the right tools for tricky jobs like this.
