Best Way to Install a Closet Rod and Shelves?

Hey everyone, I need some help with my closet situation. I had an old wire rack in there since the late '80s, and it finally gave out. I picked up a 6 ft rod and brackets but ran into a problem: only one screw aligns with a stud, and the rest just go into the sheetrock. I didn't see any beams on the opposite side either. We're planning to add shelving later because we want to clear the bed of clothes.

Should I use wall anchors or toggle anchors for these brackets, and can I use the same for the shelves later? Alternatively, should I go with the common approach of installing wooden boards over the drywall and securing the brackets that way? I'd also need to cut the rod since it's long, but that's tough for me due to a physical disability.

I want to ensure that whatever I do lasts a long time without needing a redo. I saw a video where someone used wood at an angle to mount the brackets directly onto the closet frame. Can wall anchors actually hold 50-75 lbs on a metal rod? Any advice on the best method would be appreciated! Thanks, everyone! Cheers!

I typically recommend drilling into the studs for better support. If your shelves can't hold your weight, they might not be reliable enough for your clothes either. Anchors have their limits, and I've seen them give way under too much weight.

That’s what I do too! I thought the brackets would be in the studs since they held for so long, but I guess I was wrong. I'm leaning towards adding wood panels to get a good grip on any beams and use anchors for the rest. Thanks for your input!
