Hey all, my wife and I are working on some home improvement projects, and we're planning to replace our interior doors. We've hit a snag because the existing frames measure 4.5 inches, while the walls are only 3.625 inches thick. This means I need to remove about 0.875 inches from the frame. What's the best tool for the job? Should I consider using a table saw, or do I need to take the entire frame apart first? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

It sounds like you're dealing with prehung doors, and if the casings are wider than the wall, you might actually just be able to add some deeper trim around the doors. Just attach a half-inch strip to the wall and let the trim sit flush over it. If you have to cut the frame, though, I'd recommend using a circular saw with a guide for straight cuts. Just keep the door attached to the frame while cutting to stabilize it!
A table saw is a solid choice for precision cutting. You could also look into using a smaller Dremel tool if you have one; it could give you more control for trimming. Just make sure to go slow and steady!
Using a circular saw can also work well here. Just be sure to support the door properly while you cut. Also, when trimming, leave a bit of extra material so you can sand it down later for a smooth finish. You should unhang the doors and take apart the frames to avoid cutting through any fasteners. Way easier that way!
Exactly! It's all about taking your time to ensure a clean cut.
Thanks for the tip! I’ll definitely keep that in mind. I want to avoid any mistakes with the fasteners.
