Best Way to Patch Old A/C Register Holes in the Floor?

Hey everyone! I recently had some work done on my A/C system, and the ducts were moved from under the house to the attic. The company removed all the old ducting, but now I need to fix the holes left in the floor where the old A/C registers were. What's the best recommended method for repairing these holes once I remove the register boots? Should I be nailing wood from underneath or is there another approach? Any tips would be appreciated!

What I did was make two pieces of plywood for the subfloor. The bottom piece was cut to fit between the floor joists and extended about 4 inches past the old register opening on each side. I glued and screwed these together, then mounted the piece from below into the hole. I used wood from my white oak flooring to create a nice insert that matched, and it turned out pretty seamless. You might want to try something similar, as it worked well for me and the filled spots are hard to notice once the furniture is in place.

Sounds great! Mine are also at the perimeter of the rooms, so they won't get too much traffic. As long as I patch it level with the existing floor, I think I should be good. Thanks!

It sounds like you're on the right track! Generally, if you can’t easily reach the underside, using 2x4s on either side of the hole can work really well. Just make sure some of it sticks into the hole to create a solid frame for the wood piece you plan to use for filling.

Yeah, that makes sense. I was hoping to do it all from the top to avoid crawling under the house, but I guess that's not very realistic. ?
