I just got a new utility trailer with a 2x6 lumber floor and I'm wondering how to best protect it. My dad used to mix used motor oil with diesel and apply it to the wood, which seemed to keep the water out and extend its life. Is that still a good method or are there better options available these days?

Honestly, I still stick to the old oil and diesel method. It hasn’t let me down yet! Just make sure to apply it thoroughly and let it soak in for maximum benefit.
For real protection, you might want to look into something like copper napthenate or borate solutions. They help prevent organisms that damage wood. Just remember to apply those before putting on any sealant! Those older methods of using a mix of toxic stuff or thinned motor oil are pretty outdated now, thankfully!
I usually go for a mix of used oil and diesel too! I spray it on in a few coats until I run out of the mix. Works like a charm!
Are you doing a 50/50 mix?

Wow, I never thought about it that way!
