I'm dealing with a pretty large stump in my yard, about 4ft by 4ft and weighing nearly 1000lbs. I'm planning to build a new retaining wall around it, so I'm considering either grinding it down or completely removing it. I've never tackled this kind of project before, so I could really use some advice. I can rent either a stump grinder or a mini excavator, but I'm wondering if an excavator would even work on the non-level ground I have. Anyone got tips or experiences to share?

I would definitely go for grinding it out. The roots on that stump will probably intertwine with other trees, so remove it carefully to avoid damaging them. Plus, if you're building a retaining wall, it's best to grind it down as the roots will rot, and the ground might sink later!
Rent a stump grinder; they usually come with a trailer, making it easier to transport. Just take your time and work through it bit by bit. Also, regarding your slope, I’m not sure how well they work on that, but maybe try leveling the area a bit first.
If you’re up for a workout, you could try digging it out with a shovel and an axe, but with something that big, I’d seriously recommend grinding it down. It’ll save you a ton of effort. Plus, you might end up damaging the nearby trees if you try to take it out completely!
Oh, I just checked out your pics. Yeah, grinding seems like the way to go!
I had to do stumping as punishment as a kid—it can take forever! ??
From my experience, I had a tree ground out in my yard and it was a lifesaver. I tried using a tractor and a stump bucket first, but the roots were everywhere. The grinder made quick work of it, took about three hours. I’d recommend renting one; it makes the job way easier!
Thanks for sharing! That really helps me decide.

I was curious about that! I could always use blocks to help out if needed.
