Best Way to Skimcoat a Moldy Bathroom Ceiling?

Asked By SkimmyDude42 On

I'm currently in the process of skimcoating my bathroom ceiling because I really dislike the existing texture. However, I'm facing some mildew issues up there. I have a quart of Zinsser mold-killing primer, and I'm wondering if the best approach would be to prime the ceiling first, then apply the skimcoat, and finally prime again to prevent mildew in the future. I'm also planning to replace the ceiling vent to improve airflow. Any tips or advice would be greatly appreciated!

You're in the right direction by thinking about the Zinsser primer. It’s a solid choice, but like the other commenter said, if the drywall is compromised, no amount of priming will fix that. Also, replacing it with something like Densshield for moisture areas could be a good idea. It's resilient against humidity, especially in bathrooms. Just make sure to follow up with proper ventilation and maintenance!

Thanks for your advice! I'm also considering replacing my ceiling, sounds like a good plan!

First off, if your ceiling already has mold, just using a mold-killing primer might not solve the problem long-term. It's best to consider replacing the drywall entirely. The little extra work could save you headaches later. Once you do that, definitely prime and skimcoat as planned! It'll help keep things looking fresh.

I get what you're saying! Moisture can sometimes mess with paints, especially if someone used a high-gloss finish. Lightly sanding the surface before you prime can really help with adhesion. Good luck with your project!
