Best Ways to Cool Down a Hot Garage?

Asked By CraftyCactus42 On

I recently had my house built by Pulte and added a third car garage. The interior walls are all finished, but the garage door side and the space for the third car are unfinished with no insulation or drywall. My garage faces west and gets a lot of afternoon and evening sun, which really heats things up. I have a bedroom above the garage that struggles to stay comfortable temperature-wise. I've installed ceiling fans upstairs, including in that bedroom, but they haven't helped much. I'm looking for suggestions on how to keep my garage cooler or improve airflow to bring the temperature down. I'm considering installing a small exhaust fan on the back side of the third car garage where it won't be too noticeable. Any advice would be appreciated!

Have you thought about garage door insulation kits? Stores like Home Depot and Lowe’s sell them, and you can fit them to your garage door. Also, consider a solar-powered fan for the highest point to help pull in cooler air from below. Make sure to have vents at the bottom for air circulation. It can really make a difference!

I’ve definitely seen those insulation panels mentioned before. I think I'm going to start with them since I also want to put up some paneling to semi-finish that third car area. I really need to get rid of that hot air!

Installing an exhaust fan could really help with airflow! A mini split air conditioning unit might also be a good solution, but check if it’s allowed by your HOA first. Sometimes they’re pretty strict about modifications. Good luck!

Honestly, since it's inside your garage, it might not even need HOA approval. A lot of people overlook that it’s like your home's interior. If you can make it look nice enough, you could probably get away with an exhaust fan. Just make sure it doesn't look too ugly!

I get that! I'm having a hard time with these HOA rules. I feel like as long as it looks decent, I might be alright. But still, I'm nervous about bending the rules.
