Best Ways to Cool Down My Upstairs Apartment Without Central AC?

Asked By CuriousCat27 On

Hey everyone! I'm 27 and just moved into an upstairs unit of a duplex with no central AC. The building's pretty old (around 1908) and I'm cautious about using appliance extension cords due to the outdated electrical system. It's currently 94°F outside, and I'm struggling to keep cool inside. I have a couple of window AC units, but there aren't outlets near the windows. Right now, I'm desperate for ideas on how to cool at least my bedroom and make the place more livable. Any tips on staying safe and comfortable? Thanks!

You should definitely consider getting a high-quality 12-gauge extension cord for those window units. It’ll be safe to use, and if the circuit can’t handle it, it’ll just trip the breaker. That’s your best bet to keep cool now!

Exactly! It's hot outside, so just try it out. Worst case, you just get a new place! ?

Check with your uncle (the landlord) to see if there's any modern wiring in the upstairs. If so, you can safely use an extension cord for the AC. Also, consider getting some heat-reflective curtains and use box fans. They can really help with airflow!

Lol, nothing's been updated in years. My uncle inherited this place from my great grandma! ?

If you've got an outlet anywhere, try vining a portable AC unit out the window if your space can handle it. And if your area isn’t too humid, a swamp cooler could be a game-changer! Plus, ensure you close windows during the hottest times to keep the heat out!
