I'm trying to figure out how to heat and cool our upper level, where our bedroom is located in a half story. Unfortunately, the ductwork doesn't reach up there. I received a quote for a mini split system, but it was way beyond our budget. I've heard about Envi wall heaters—are those any good? Is there a model that can both heat and cool?

A mini split is probably the best solution for this situation. If the price is too high, you could try getting more quotes or consider doing a DIY installation to save some cash.
That might be tricky since our room layout doesn't really have enough wall space for one without it being upright.
