Best Ways to Hold Work When Using a Turning Saw?

I'm wondering about the best methods for holding work when using a turning saw. Should I be placing the piece vertically in a vise or horizontally on a bird's mouth, similar to how I would with a fret saw? I've got a new TFWW turning saw and I'm about to cut out some junior-size bracket feet, but I feel a bit lost on the best way to do this.

It really depends on the situation! For thinner stock, I usually back it up with another horizontal board and cut vertically to avoid tearout. If I’m going for a rough cut, I’ll clamp it vertically in the vise and saw horizontally. Totally depends on the piece and what kind of cut I’m making.

Sounds like there’s no one-size-fits-all! I might try the bird's mouth because holding the saw vertically feels better on my wrist.
