I'm creating a wooden panel where I want to inlay a strip of steel that will hold notes using magnets, similar to a refrigerator door setup. I plan to cut a shallow trench for the steel piece, but I'm not sure about the best adhesive to use or how much space I should leave for it when making the cut. Any tips or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

I'd go for a hammered-in force fit if you're looking for a secure hold. If you decide to glue it, don't forget to roughen up the steel surface first. This will help the glue stick better! Plus, using something like West System G/flex epoxy is a great option since it’s tougher and more flexible than standard epoxy, which can break easier with temperature changes.
I definitely recommend using epoxy for this. You want a snug fit for the steel, but don't hammer it in too tightly since that might cause issues later. Clamping it while the epoxy sets is a good idea to ensure a strong hold.
For a reliable bond, epoxy is the way to go. Make sure to prep the metal by cleaning with isopropyl alcohol or acetone before applying the epoxy. This will help with adhesion. If you follow these tips, you should have a solid inlay!
