Best Ways to Keep 4x4s Aligned End to End?

I'm setting up a terracing project where I'm joining 4x4s end to end over a span of 16+ feet. In a previous attempt, the timbers ended up warping, causing gaps between the ends. I'm looking for advice on how to prevent this from happening again. One thought I had was to attach a 2x4 underneath the 4x4s for support and alignment. Do you think that's a good idea, or should I consider using metal straps or some kind of nailed plate to secure the ends together? Any suggestions would be really appreciated!

Using metal brackets, like those meant for decking, could definitely help keep everything aligned and prevent warping. If you could share a sketch of your setup, that would make it easier to visualize and provide better advice!

I do have a sketch but can't seem to figure out how to upload it here. I posted a pic to another forum if that helps!
