I'm facing a challenge with cooling the second floor of my house. The central air system doesn't really reach there effectively. The second floor consists of two bedrooms (one is an office and they both serve as guest rooms), a small hallway, and a bathroom. Should I consider getting a portable AC for each bedroom, or are there better solutions out there? How do swamp coolers stack up? Just to clarify, the AC unit starts in the basement.

Just keep your ceiling fan running on 'On' mode. It helps distribute cold air much better. I have a similar setup, and it makes a noticeable difference! You could also try blowing cool air from a box fan upstairs.
If you're in a dry area, a whole house fan might be the way to go. It can really circulate the air and help cool things down without the extra cost of multiple units.
I had a similar issue and ended up with a window AC unit in my loft. It’s noisy, but it does the job. Swamp coolers aren’t great unless you’re in a really dry area—they can actually complicate things with a central AC running. If you decide on portables, dual hose models are definitely more effective.
