Best Ways to Maintain Heavy Bag Mounts?

Hey everyone! I'm a coach and maintenance worker at an MMA gym, and I've been trying to troubleshoot an issue with our heavy bags. We have tall, 160-pound bags that mount to a 3/4 inch eyelet using a 1-inch carabiner on a standalone frame. I've been using 5w20 synthetic oil in the hopes of reducing friction and wear, but it's just making a mess while the metal still wears down. Currently, I'm using a DIY bushing made from a pool noodle wrapped in electrical tape to avoid buying motor mounts, but I'm concerned about how often I'll need to replace those. Is there a better coating or bushing option that can withstand the force of a heavy bag swinging aggressively, which won't break the bank and will last longer? Any brainstorming or ideas you all have would be greatly appreciated!

You could look into using a ball joint like ones found in vehicles. They press into place and are held by a bolt, but it might be a bit tricky to set up. A universal joint from a driveshaft is another option - they have roller bearings with rubber seals and a grease fitting. It’s affordable (around $10) and could be modified for better longevity. Although, it’s tough since the bag will eventually wear on the metal hardware due to the swinging motions.

I really like that idea! Just frustrating to think about the metal-to-metal wear... but I appreciate your insight, thanks!

Have you tried using white lithium grease? It works really well on mine and lasts a long time with just a small amount. Might save you from the mess of motor oil!

I’ve heard about that from a patron at the gym. Definitely sounds worth a try, thanks!
