Best Ways to Prep a Textured Wall for Painting?

I'm a first-time homeowner venturing into painting my bedroom, but I've hit a snag with this wall that's super textured and has an odd brick pattern in some spots. My wife and I aren't fans of it at all. I've done my homework, and I know proper prep is essential, but I don't have experience with unique wall surfaces like this. I want to make the wall smooth and clean before painting, but I'm not sure if I should invest in tools or hire a pro right off the bat. I suspect it's drywall because we managed to nail into it okay. What do you suggest?

Have you considered using a product like PolyCell SmoothOver? It comes with a roller and a smoothing tool, which sounds perfect for what you're dealing with. Just make sure to use an orbital sander first to knock down any hard edges. It could save you a ton of time and effort instead of going full DIY on prepping the wall!

That sounds like a clever workaround! I might just give it a shot – easier than tearing down the wall for sure!

Before you do any major work, make sure to double-check what the wall is made of. If it's actually masonry, that could complicate things quite a bit. If possible, try to consult a pro if you're feeling out of your depth. That way, they can advise you on whether it's a simple skim or something more labor-intensive.

Good point! I guess knowing what I'm really dealing with could save me a headache later on.
