I recently had to get rid of a hedge row because it was overrun by invasive buckthorn. Now I've got some stumps that are around three inches in diameter, and I suspect there are quite a few roots buried in the ground. I want to plant something new in that area, but removing these stumps seems like an impossible task. Any advice on how to tackle this?

Another option is to rent a small trackhoe from a place like Sunbelt. It's pretty easy to use – you can get the hang of it in just about ten minutes. Just dig around the stumps instead of trying to pull them out directly. And using a power washer to clean off the dirt can help if your town has specific yard waste collection rules.
You can definitely dig them out using a shovel, axe, or pickaxe if you're up for it. It can be tough, especially if you're dealing with stubborn roots.
Yeah, I'm too old and it's too hot out for all that digging.
Oh good idea! I have my forklift license, so I think I could manage that.
