Best Ways to Rig Lift Points for a Heavy Jointer/Planer

I'm picking up a used combo jointer/planer tomorrow, but I'm not sure how to safely lift it off the seller's truck onto my mobile base. It's over 500 pounds, and I'm done trying to move heavy stuff using basic strongback techniques. I've borrowed a portable engine hoist for this purpose and plan to lift it just high enough so that they can drive the truck out from underneath it. After that, I'll lower it onto the mobile base and roll it into my shop. However, I can't find much information on where the lift points are on the machine in the vendor manual. Can anyone share their experiences or tips on rigging it up properly?

When I lifted a similar machine, I used two slings positioned close to the base. Even though yours is a combo machine, if it has long infeed/outfeed beds, that might work too. I lowered mine onto some boards on the engine hoist to minimize lifting time. For getting it onto the mobile base, I raised it and then pulled it out towards me while someone slowly released the jack so it cleared the hoist frame. I used 2" x 6.5" slings rated for 2000 lbs from Harbor Freight; very affordable! Just make sure to use a shackle that fits both slings onto the hoist's hook properly.

I wouldn't recommend lifting by the beds at all; those latches won't hold the weight. You might consider running slings under the legs of the base instead.

That's a good idea! If the beds aren't sturdy enough for slings, you might try running the slings under the base and using a 2x4 on top to prevent the slings from pushing down against the tool.

Have you checked how the seller is getting it into their truck? If they use a forklift, you might replicate that method. Alternatively, if you can take apart any components, it could make transportation easier. When using the engine hoist, some ratcheting straps wrapped around the machine could serve as a solid connection point. Just keep an eye on the balance!
