Best Ways to Seal Wood for Alcohol Use?

Hey everyone,

So I recently found myself with a router table (not really a woodworker here!). I'm looking to try out a project where I carve some channels into a block of wood, and my plan is to fill these grooves with isopropyl alcohol. My main concern is preventing the alcohol from soaking into the wood. What kind of lacquer or coating would be best for this? Is there a specific resin I should consider?

Thanks for any advice!

It's awesome that you're diving into this! Just keep in mind that router tables can be tricky for beginners; safety is key! As for your question, I'd suggest using polyurethane, as it might hold up against the alcohol better than other finishes. Just to be safe, do a little test patch first. Avoid using shellac, though!

Thanks for the heads-up! I’ve done some work with power tools, and I totally agree—safety is super important! I’ll definitely test before diving in.

Honestly, I'm not super confident about any finish holding up against isopropyl alcohol since it's such a strong solvent. Have you thought about why you want to use it? If it's for soaking, that could be a problem regardless of the finish. Just something to consider!

I'm using it because it’s a great solvent and I want to soak some stuff. I'm looking for a fun way to experiment with it!
