Best Ways to Secure Wood for Carving?

Hey everyone! I'm diving into wood relief carving as a new hobby since I'm recovering from a foot injury. I'm just getting started and looking to buy my materials, but I don't have any experience with woodworking and don't own a workbench. Can anyone share the best ways to secure the wood while I carve? Would simple clamps to fasten it to my table work well, or is there a better approach? Thanks a ton for your advice!

Using clamps to attach the wood to your table is also a perfectly good way to go! Just make sure to put a thin piece of plywood underneath to protect your desk. It works well if you don’t have a dedicated workbench.

A good option is to look into making a bench hook! It’s a simple setup that you can whip up from some scrap wood, and it just takes a few minutes. It helps hold your wood securely while you work on it, plus it’s definitely budget-friendly!

Another popular method is to use double-sided carpet tape. Just stick your carving to a larger board with the tape, then clamp that larger board to your workspace. It’ll keep your carving steady and won’t damage your desk.

That sounds great! I’ll definitely give that a try.
