I'm planning to start siphoning gray water from my upstairs bathroom to use on my garden. I have a hose ready, but I'm wondering about the best way to kick-start the siphon effect. The distance seems too far to just suck it out. Any tips on how to get it going? Thanks!

I prefer to connect the hose to the tap first. Fill it up and then quickly disconnect while plunging the hose end back into the bath. The water weight should automatically start the siphon, even from upstairs to the ground floor! If it’s a big job, like my 6ft aquarium, I use a drill-mounted pump; it's cheap and easy!
To get your siphon going, try submerging the hose in the bathwater first. Make sure there's enough water in it, then cap the end of the hose with your finger when you pull it out to keep the water from spilling. Once you get it outside, remember to aim the end low to help the siphon effect kick in!
Thanks for the tip, I’ll give that a shot!
You could also invest in a small pump that attaches to a cordless drill. This will either start your siphon or just act as a pump if you prefer. Easy solution!
Thanks! I just spotted one on Amazon—might have to grab it!

Or, if you're pulling it through a window, consider using a bung at the end to seal it.
