Hey everyone! I'm looking for some practical advice on soundproofing between the walls of my duplex. I'm considering using mass loaded vinyl (MLV) over the existing drywall, topped with wall panel boards. I want to avoid adding another layer of drywall if possible. Do you think the MLV and panels will be effective? Should I apply this on both sides of the wall or just one? Any insights or suggestions would be really appreciated! Thanks!

If you’re looking for the best soundproofing, a more reliable method is to build a second staggered 2x4 wall in front of your existing one, and insulate the space between. This creates a much better barrier for noise than simply adding layers on top of your current drywall.
Using Rockwool SafeNSound insulation behind your wall will definitely help more than just MLV and panels. While those materials can reduce some sound, if there's no insulation in the wall, it’ll only be a temporary fix. Insulation really makes a difference in blocking noise.
Just a heads up, sound travels through solids way better than through air, so if the floor joists and wall studs aren't isolated, your efforts might not have a huge impact. If you can’t deal with those parts, it could limit your overall results.

I get that. I'm really trying to find the quickest and most efficient way to improve soundproofing without a total overhaul.
