I have a set of stairs made from untreated wood (7 steps) that I'm planning to attach to my deck. The idea is to create access for my dog to a fenced area while keeping the main gate closed. What's the most effective way to treat this wood so it lasts for about 10 years? I've come across suggestions for burning the wood, but that seems risky. I also have half a gallon of tar that I could apply to the ground contact points if that would help. Any advice?

You might consider using Woodlife CopperCoat as it offers a level of protection similar to treated lumber. Just a heads up, though, it has a strong odor and not the best for health—probably best to keep the kids away during application!
Even untreated wood can last quite a while before rotting, and even 10 years is pushing it for pressure-treated lumber in some climates. A good wood sealer is your best bet for increasing durability. Look for a premium brand that specializes in outdoor wood protection.

? Do you think it's necessary to take the steps apart first?
