I'm looking for advice on wallpapering over walls with knockdown texture in my closet. I'd like to add some MDF paneling or wood slat panels, and I'm a bit torn on the best way to approach the wallpaper part. Here are my thoughts on the options:
1. Skim coat the wall, then apply traditional or pre-pasted wallpaper.
2. Simply wallpaper over the existing knockdown texture.
3. Use some inexpensive flat surface like MDF and wallpaper over that.
4. Maybe there's a better option I'm not considering?
I'm leaning towards using a flat surface for the panels, but I'm concerned about cheaper fiber boards bubbling, plus I want to keep it budget-friendly. What have your experiences been with this?

You can find 4x8 ft hardboard wall panels for around $10-15 at big box stores. I used them for a board and batten wall, and there was no bubbling at all. They should work fine for wallpaper, but just a heads up—you might see the seams between panels once the wallpaper is up.
What panels are you finding for that price? I’ve searched everywhere and all I see are drywall options.
