I'm a contractor remodeling my mom's bathroom, and she's really set on having a wooden shower bench rather than a tile one. I've heard that teak is the top choice, but I'm curious if there are more budget-friendly alternatives out there. Also, what would be the best way to finish the wood to ensure it lasts? Any advice would be super helpful!

Teak is definitely the best option for a shower bench. It's durable and naturally resistant to water. If you're looking for something more affordable, how about white oak? A lumber yard guy mentioned it handles moisture pretty well, plus it’s got that solid feel to it.
Good call, I've heard great things about it too!
I’d suggest considering Port Orford Cedar. Just be aware that it has a strong smell when wet, which some people love and others don’t. It's unique, so maybe check in with your mom first to see if she’s okay with it. I’m currently making one for my own shower, and the scent is something to think about!
Ipe is a solid option that’s often less expensive than traditional teak. It holds up really well in moisture, and since it's so dense, it can withstand a lot of wear. If you're sealing it properly in a waterproof finish, you could go with a range of woods, so long as they don’t get direct sun exposure. It’s mainly about keeping the soap and water off it!
That’s a great point! It’s all about the finish when it’s in a wet environment.
Yes, Ipe is excellent, and it’s just as striking as teak!
Absolutely, I think white oak can go a long way with proper care!
