Hi everyone! I'm planning to build a loft bed for my daughter that will be about 5 feet off the ground. I'm considering using 1x4 and 1x6 boards, either clear pine or a similar type of wood. My main question is, if I attach the cleat to a 1x6 for the slats, will that provide enough support for a twin mattress along with a child? Looking for any advice or experiences you might have!

When I built something similar, I went with 2x3s for the horizontal pieces and 2x4s for the vertical supports. I even ripped a 2x3 in half for extra slat support. It turned out really solid!
I'd recommend using 2x4 or 2x6 boards instead; they’re much sturdier and less prone to splitting. Remember, kids can be a bit wild, so it’s worth making the bed super strong—like it’s playground equipment!
Good point! I was trying to keep the design clean, but I could always cover the top and bottom to make it look nicer.
