Building a Simple Step for My Dog: Need Some Advice!

Hey everyone! I've decided to build my elderly dog a single step to help her get into my bed easier. Here's what I've got so far: I'm planning for the step to be 7 inches high, 16 inches wide, and 10 inches deep. I thought about using 2x2s for the frame along with 3/4 inch plywood for support since my pup weighs about 75-80 pounds.

Initially, I wanted to build front and back frames separately, attaching them with metal brackets at the corners, but then I considered cutting the corners at 45 degrees for a simpler screw joint.

Now I have a few questions: 1) For a single step meant for my dog's weight, would one method be structurally better than the other? 2) If I go with the 45-degree cuts, how can I give it depth without ruining the joints? 3) Finally, would a mitre saw be overkill for this project? I can use a table saw at my parent's place, but I'd have to drive to my grandma's for a mitre saw.

Honestly, you might be overthinking this a bit! Just grab a 2x8 board from Home Depot. It’s 7-1/4 inches wide, so you can easily make a rectangle that suits your needs. Use some 3-inch deck screws to hold it together. For the top, 1/2 inch plywood is definitely more than enough for your dog. You're doing a great job for your furry friend!

With an 8-foot board, you probably won't even need the plywood. Just go with the 2x8 for the top!
