Building Ground-Based Solar Arrays Without Anchors: What Works?

Has anyone here managed to create ground-based solar arrays without the use of anchors? I have a prime location in mind, but it happens to be over a septic leach field. Plus, it would be great to avoid dealing with any permitting hassles if possible. Any tips or experiences?

You can definitely weigh down your array instead of anchoring it. Just make sure to check your local water table. The amount of weight you'll need really depends on the wind conditions in your area. Local regulations also play a role here, so it’s worth looking into those too.

What you're looking for is a "ballasted" system. These are suitable for places where you can't dig into the ground, like landfills or restoration sites. You can use precast concrete blocks for support, but keep in mind that while this approach doesn’t always eliminate the need for permits, it can make the process easier depending on your local authority's rules.

I’ve built mine using 2x3 and 2x4 lumber to tie them together, and I’ve had no issues even in 43 mph winds. I just make sure to position them against the wind for stability. The key is to add enough ballast—like concrete bags—to keep them grounded. Just be aware that if an inspector sees it, you'll need to show you have everything up to code or deal with potential fines. It’s a bit of a risk if someone reports it.

That sounds like a solid approach, especially if you’re in a windy area! Just curious, how do you handle the angle adjustments for optimal sunlight?

Good point about the inspector! Planning a backup could save you a lot of trouble later on. Did you have any troubles getting everything set up?
