I'm looking to extend the bottom of my existing 2x4 rafters to make room for insulation and possibly drywall. My plan is to attach additional 2x4s underneath the rafters (just like the example image shows). After that, I'd strap the ceiling and hang drywall on top. I'm curious if the current rafters can support that load, and if not, what I need to do to ensure there's enough support for everything. Thanks in advance!

Honestly, the load isn't really the main concern here; ventilation is! Depending on your plans for the building, stuffing insulation into the rafter bays might turn your roof into a 'hot roof' which can lead to moisture issues. Instead, think about framing a ceiling with proper ventilation to keep that airflow going. You'll want both inflow and outflow to prevent any damage down the line.
Technically, those 2x4 rafters might not be rated to support the extra weight of drywall and insulation on their own, but many people go ahead and do it anyway, especially if you don’t have snow loads to worry about. One tip is to consider using poly iso foam between the drywall and rafters. It’ll be lighter and more effective than just adding more 2x4s.
I'm planning on adding baffles and a ridge vent to help with airflow. Plus, I’ll be installing a mini split for heating and cooling. I'm just trying to avoid losing too much headroom by framing a ceiling!
