Can a 6-Inch Benchtop Jointer Handle 2x2s and 2x4s?

Hey folks! I'm new to woodworking and I've just started working with some rough cut lumber from a local source. Most of what I have are 2x2s and 2x4s, but they're all pretty unevenly cut and long, some over 10 feet. I'm considering getting a 6-inch benchtop jointer that I saw online, but I'm unsure if it will be able to handle these boards effectively. I'd really appreciate any advice on whether this jointer is appropriate for my needs, especially since I'm just starting out. Thanks in advance!

Honestly, if you're totally new to this, I'd be cautious about using a jointer right off the bat. It requires a certain level of skill to mill rough lumber properly, and they can be dangerous if you're not familiar with how they work. Maybe practice on some finished lumber a bit more before tackling this project.

I hear you! I've been using finished wood to practice, but I’ll definitely learn more about the jointer before I try it out.

You could definitely use that jointer for your 2x2s and 2x4s, but I'm not sure why you'd want to. It might be better to just flatten one surface first and then run it through a planer for final smoothing. Just make sure the wood is stable and not too heavy for the machine.

That makes sense! I thought about flattening one side first and then using a planer. Just wanted to confirm I'm on the right track.

Before you dive in, plan your project and cut the lumber to length, leaving some extra on the ends. Using shorter boards will make it much easier on that smaller jointer!

Thanks for the tip! Cutting them down first seems like a smart move.
