Can a Beginner Really Hang Drywall on the Ceiling?

We had a leak from the condo above us and now our ceiling drywall needs replacing above the tub. The area is about 3ft x 5ft. I'm pretty handy with mudding, texturing, and painting, but I've never hung drywall before. Do you think my husband and I can pull this off ourselves, or should we just bite the bullet and hire a professional handyman?

For sure, you can do it! After watching a few YouTube videos, you’ll be set. Just keep in mind that the real question is how it’ll look afterward. A pro will make it seamless, but if you’re okay with it being a bit rough around the edges, dive in! And honestly, if you're looking for someone to tape it well, it's better to hire a specialist instead of a handyman; they sometimes don’t do the best drywall work and could leave you hanging, literally!

Absolutely, you can do it! I tackled a larger job on my first try and was really happy with the results. It just may take you longer compared to a pro since they can usually get it done in a day or two. Plus, the overhead work can be tough on your shoulders. If you do go for it, check out Home Depot to see if they rent drywall lifts—they make it so much easier! Good luck, you got this!

Definitely! It seems like a small enough project for two people, especially if you're lifting a piece that size—it shouldn't be too bad. But if you're feeling ambitious and thinking about going for a full sheet alone, those lifts are a lifesaver!

Taping and applying compound can be tricky, so if you're confident in those areas, go ahead and DIY! Just remember, practice makes perfect, so don’t stress if it isn’t perfect on the first go. It's a learning process!
