I recently bought manual chain-operated ceiling fans after being told by my builder that I could control the light and fan speed separately using two pre-wired switches in each room. One switch has a dimmer for the light, and the other has three settings for the fan speed. However, during installation, the contractor only connected the fan to one switch and said the fan couldn't be hooked up to both switches as promised. The installation manual actually provides instructions for using two switches. Has anyone dealt with this before? Any advice or expertise would be appreciated!

I'd suggest you hand the contractor the fan's manual and ask him to clarify his reasoning. If it says it can be done, then it should be possible! You might also want to gently remind him that you deserve the installation as originally promised.
It sounds like the contractor might just be inexperienced. He should call a more experienced electrician to help him figure this out. If they don't wire it right now, it might become a headache later. Definitely bring up your concerns to the foreman before final walkthrough!
Honestly, if they're saying it can't be done, something feels off. It might be worth asking if the right wiring is in place. If it's just 12/2, they might need to pull the fan down and set it up correctly with the right configurations. Don't settle until it's wired right!
